Schmitt "Nieder-Flörsheimer" Pinot Noir '23

Bianka and Daniel Schmitt have become one of the defining names in Rheinhessen’s natural wine movement, but their story is far richer than the trend they’re often grouped with. Working biodynamically since 2012, the Schmitts took Daniel’s family estate—a farm passed down through generations in the small village of Flörsheim-Dalheim—and transformed it into one of Germany’s most soulful, expressive, and ecologically thoughtful wineries. Their vineyards sit on gentle rolling hills shaped by ancient seas, with limestone and clay soils that lend a quiet precision and a beautiful mineral edge to everything they produce.

The “Nieder-Flörsheimer” Pinot Noir comes from a single, meticulously tended site near Nieder-Flörsheim, a parcel that has proven itself particularly suited to the grape’s finesse. The 2023 vintage shows why the Schmitts are increasingly considered among the most intuitive Pinot Noir growers in Germany. Fermented with native yeasts, aged in neutral oak, and bottled unfined and unfiltered, the wine is a study in purity and restraint.

In the glass, this wine offers beautiful aromas of wild strawberries, red currants, dried herbs and a hint of rose petal. Soft and silky on the palate, the red fruit is framed by bright acidity and soft tannins. This is an elegant and transparent Pinot Noir. 

Food pairing is where this wine truly shines. Its elegance makes it a natural match for roasted chicken with thyme, seared duck breast, or pork loin glazed with cranberry or cherry. It’s equally at home with mushroom-driven dishes—think mushroom risotto, maitake tempura, or a simple plate of roasted root vegetables.
